At age 43, in 1879, Joseph Ferdnand Cheval, the postman of the small, rural village of Hauterives south and east of Lyon,
began a job that would occupy him for the rest of his life (1912). Using cement, shells and river rocks, he built an ‘Ideal Palace’ that he intended for his mausoleum. Although French law later precluded burial outside a cemetery, Le Palais idéal du Facteur Cheval remains as a tribute to his imagination and limitless energy.
